The educational objective of the program is to provide the highest possible education and training in clinical, academic and surgical skills. We also strive to provide patients with a caring, compassionate, and professional environment in which health maintenance, preventive care and appropriate treatment are our top priorities. We strive to prepare our residents for the dual roles of being a primary care physician to women as well as that of a consultant and surgical specialist.Mutual respect and teamwork are emphasized. Residents actively participate in continuing education, medical student education as well as research. The faculty provides the necessary support and guidance.
The Ob/Gyn residency program is a joint effort of the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) and the Charleston Division of the WVU School of Medicine. It is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. As the state's largest medical facility and a regional tertiary care center, CAMC serves the needs of a large and diverse population. WVU/CAMC offers many specialized services which cannot be found elsewhere in our region, including high-risk obstetrics, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology/infertility (including all areas of assisted reproductive technology.) We run very busy services in each of these areas, providing abundant learning opportunities and experience to residents.
There are no fellowships in Ob/Gyn at CAMC. Thus, residents get first-hand experience and advanced hands-on training in the subspecialties, as well as ample research opportunities. We accept transfers and referrals from our regions, and we see a broad spectrum of pathological entities. In addition to intensive subspecialized training, opportunities for managing routine clinical problems and performing core surgical procedures are plentiful. Residents manage their own continuity clinic patients and learn fundamental clinical management strategies in the "real life" setting.
In addition to our full-time faculty, we have many experienced local private obstetrician-gynecologists who serve as associate clinical faculty. We assist on all of their Cesarean sections and on most of their gynecological surgeries, as well as provide pre-operative and post-operative care under their guidance. In addition to covering our inpatient services, faculty also attend our continuity clinics. This provides a unique opportunity to learn clinical management as well as a host of varied surgical techniques from accomplished physicians of diverse educational and clinical backgrounds.
Applications are accepted only through the AAMC Electronic Residency Application Service ( ERAS).
